NHS - A Long View of Health in Pontefract
In 1948, a huge change came to Britain with the creation of the National Health Service, which aimed to serve all from "the cradle to the grave".
In the 60th anniversary year, this exhibition tries to take the long view of health in Pontefract going back to the middle ages.
From an archaeological cleft skull to a Barbara Hepworth painting of a tibia graft (especially commissioned at the birth of the NHS), the displays also include health before the regulation of medicine and care based on public subscription at the Infirmary.
Since the closure of the Prince of Wales pit, the NHS is now Pontefract's largest employer as it is in the whole of Europe.
