We all know that the Cavendish Arcade is a little piece of heaven in Buxton, so when you are upstairs in the Cavendish Café Restaurant it feels like you are eating with the angels.  There is something about sitting beneath that stylish stained glass roof that brightens a dull day, but for a sunny afternoon or evening out in Buxton you just have to try the roof terrace. And the food is dreamy too!  English food – with a twist!

So is it a Café or is it an English Restaurant?  Well this is the clever bit.  You’d expect something intelligent from John, a well-travelled chef who was nominated and awarded the title of Masterchef of Great Britain.  After a time working in 5 star hotels around the world - Europe, South Africa, Cairo, and Guernsey - John settled down in Whaley Bridge and ran JJ’s Bistro, which he says was a favourite of many Buxton residents.  Now he is busy transferring all that atmosphere and good food into the heart of Buxton.  So perhaps the question should be extended, is Buxton’s Cavendish Café Restaurant a Café, an English Restaurant or a Bistro?

The answer lies in the opening times – 8.30am – 11pm.  There is clearly time in these hours to serve a great breakfast, move on to morning coffee, offer lunches to suit various appetites and deadlines, tempt people to stop shopping for afternoon tea and then start lighting the candles and uncork the wine for evening dining.  The menu changes for each of these truly English food-eating institutions, so the real answer is that all these occasions are combined to create an English restaurant.

John is bringing all his worldly chef’s experience to this modern English restaurant in Buxton.  He cares about sourcing good food locally and is passionate about its quality.  He selects grass-fed animals, hung for a decent amount of time to achieve a full flavour to the meat dishes he creates.  He works with a local greengrocer to source high quality vegetables.

Whether you are enjoying an ice-cream on the pavement terrace, tucking into pizza, pasta or risotto for lunch or having a romantic night out in Buxton, you could ponder this question of modern definitions.  For his part John and his family just want everyone in Buxton to share their passion for great food, great wine and a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Very friendly place to eat. Excellent value. Food is of good quality and prepared with care. House wine is decent and comes in a choice of two sizes of glass. Interesting place to sit and look around at the the unusual decor - fascinating designs in the barrel-vaulted glass roof. Looking forward to my next visit.

Great place for a coffee and a cake or a full blown meal. The all-day breakfast is great value and top quality and there are some great value sandwiches and rolls with imaginative fillings. Great place to while away the hours whilst the wife is in bag and Baggage!
