Bedford a safer place?

I read an article today on the Invest in Bedford Website which talks about the decline in crime in the Bedford town centre which has been proven to have dropped by 70% in the last 3 years. This decline, according to the Bedford development agency is directly attributable to the initiatives and the partnerships between the Bedford Blucaps (Or Bedford Bid) and the Bedford police.

One of their key initiatives is to make people feel safe when they are shopping in Bedford. What do you think?

Do you feel safe when in Bedford town centre? Do you think that the presence of the Blue Caps and the Police Community Support Officers make a difference?

All credit to Bedford BID and the work of the Police - any reduction in crime is welcomed. A substantial increase in detection would be even better, but that's another matter.

However, rewarding though the reduction in crime is, it's not of the sort that encourages people to feel safe. The crimes that have reduced are things like shoplifting and fraud. Those impact and are noticed by the shops, not by the shoppers.

Since BID was set up to work on behalf of the businesses, this is indeed a success, but it will have passed unremarked by the old and the frail. Their need remains to be tackled.
